The basics....

Tools. Everybody needs them. Everybody uses them in some way or another. But there are so many, what ones do you really need?

Well, that entirely depends on your personal preference. If you are more on the side of DIYs and home/garden improvements than the tools you will need will be different than if you are more like someone who is just trying to get by with their home’s basic maintenance. Even so, there are some tools, no matter what you are doing, that you will always have to reach for.

It never hurts to have a few different types

First, the most self-explanatory of them all, the hammer and tape measure. As we all know, from hanging a picture to building garden shelves, the hammer and tape measure are needed for just about everything we do. Go to a hardware store and start looking for ones that fit you best, whether that is a rubber handle on the hammer for a comfortable hold or a short handle so that it fits better in your little storage area. Or maybe you are looking for a 10 ft tape measure instead of a 25 ft or 50 ft one. There are many options so take some time to check them out.

Next there is the screwdriver.

If it doesn’t require a nail, the screwdriver is going to be your best friend. Some people like to have individual screwdrivers with only one head (aka, bit).

(Multi-bit screwdriver)

However, I tend to air more on the side of multi-bit ones. That way I only have one screwdriver to worry about since it has the option to change out the head for whatever purpose I need (setting up a plantstand from the store, putting up a new handle on a cabinet door, fixing a heating element on the stove or dryer, making a nest box for the chickens, changing out a shower head, etc.).

There is also the hand-held level, stud finder, crescent wrench, and pliers. (As shown in clockwise order starting in the upper-left corner in the pictures below.)

A hand-held level is quite useful for hanging up décor or curtain rods, installing a new washing machine, drier, water heater, or chest freezer, or even putting up a new fence post in your garden.

If you own a home, a stud-finder is a great tool to use when you are hanging up something heavy (or intended for heavy use) such as coat hanger, quilt dowel, or picture frame, etc.

The crescent wrench is another must-have tool. You can use it on your car or lawnmower battery or use it for plumbing purposes like tightening a faucet. You will never know when something like this will be needed.

A good pair of pliers will also come in handy for really anything that you need to pull, hold, or grip.

Safety Glasses

And lastly, a nice pair of safety glasses. You may never know what could go wrong and not all the time do the cheaper pairs hold up. I know from experience.

Whether you are just trying to make sure you can take care of any incidentals in your home, or you are looking to start building up your toolbox for that DIY project, these are the everyday tools you will be reaching for time and time again.
